AMP Research: Best Truck BedStep / Bumper Step

For you if: you climb the rear bumper to reach the bed often, you want the step to disappear under the bumper when you are done, and your truck is on AMP’s BedStep chart for the matching SKU.

Skip this page if: you want AMP PowerStep running boards along the rocker. Skip nerf bars and flat fixed boards. Skip if you only want a hitch-receiver step (see the Westin HDX chip below). Skip Raptor and dual-exhaust apps excluded on the install guide for your year.

Westin HDX Drop Hitch Step 56-10015 — universal 2 in receiver hitch step, not an under-bumper BedStep. Westin’s page for that part does not print a step load rating. Do not treat it as a 300 lb AMP BedStep substitute.

Bed access at the bumper is different from cab entry. PowerSteps and nerf bars get you into the doors. A BedStep gets you into the bed over the bumper without a milk crate.

Retractable under-bumper vs hitch step

AMP BedStep mounts to the bumper structure and folds under the bumper. A hitch drop step plugs into a 2-inch receiver and hangs behind the hitch. Towing, spare tire carriers, and bumper sensors all change which one clears. If you live on a gooseneck or fifth-wheel, confirm bumper and hitch clearance before you order either style.

Load rating

AMP prints 300 lb on the BedStep product page. That is the number on this card. Westin 56-10015 does not print a load rating on its product page, so this page leaves that cell blank.

Stow when driving

AMP’s install guide attention note: stow the step when driving. A deployed step is for loading, not for highway geometry. Kick it up before you leave the job site.

Most truck owners climb the bumper once or twice a week: coolers, feed bags, toolboxes, kids into a camper shell. A retractable BedStep gives a flat pad at bumper height and then disappears so you do not leave a hanging step in a parking lot.

AMP’s under-bumper mount is meant to stay clear of an open tailgate and of towing on the product-page copy. Still walk the install with your hitch head, bumper sensors, and spare-tire carrier in mind. Dual exhaust tips change clearance on some fourteenth-gen F-150s — that is why the 75328-class guide excludes dual-exhaust apps on later revs. Confirm before you drill.

PowerStep vs BedStep vs nerf

PowerStep is a rocker-panel board that deploys with the door. Nerf bars are fixed tubes under the doors. BedStep is only the rear bumper. Shoppers who land here after a “best steps” search often need cab entry instead — send them to power boards or nerf bars when the problem is getting into the seat, not into the bed.

When a hitch step is enough

If you already run a 2-inch receiver every day and you only need occasional bed access at the hitch, Westin HDX 56-10015 is the chip on this page. It is not retractable under the bumper, and Westin does not print a pound rating on that product page. For a dedicated under-bumper pad with a printed 300 lb line, stay on AMP BedStep.

Match the AMP application SKU to year, cab, and bumper. 75312-01A covers 2015–2020 F-150 and excludes Raptor on the AMP install guide for that SKU. 75328-01A covers the 2021–2023 F-150 class and excludes Raptor and dual-exhaust apps on later revs — confirm your year on AMP / RealTruck before Shop. Other trucks have their own BedStep part numbers on AMP’s chart. Do not force an F-150 bracket onto a different bumper.

Bolt-on on most apps; some drilling may be required. Follow the AMP sheet for your SKU. Check clearance to the spare, hitch head, and bumper sensors. After install, deploy and stow a few times empty, then with a normal load under the 300 lb rating. Re-torque after the first week.
