Best dual dash cam for a truck

Front+rear vs 3-channel is the first fork. A dual kit (VIOFO) covers the road ahead and the glass behind the cab. A 3-channel (VANTRUE N4 Pro) adds an interior IR camera — useful if you haul people, do rideshare, or want cabin video in a claim. Garmin Mini 3 is one channel: front. Garmin will sync up to four cameras in the Drive app, but each cam is sold separately. There is no Mini 3 Dual ASIN on US Amazon. Do not invent a rear bundle.

Parking mode is not the cigarette-lighter plug. VIOFO buffered parking (15 seconds before / 30 after an impact or motion) needs the HK3 hardwire kit, sold separately. VANTRUE buffered parking (10 seconds before / 30 after) needs its hardwire kit, sold separately. Garmin Parking Guard needs a Constant Power Cable (OBD, powers up to two cameras) or a parking-mode hardwire, plus a Vault subscription for phone alerts. Plug it into 12V only and it dies when you kill the truck.

Dash heat cooks lithium cells. All three of these use supercapacitors, not a pack battery. That is the truck spec. A cheap Amazon dual with a lithium cell in the head unit is the one that bricks on a summer windshield.

Rear cable length is a SuperCrew / long-bed problem. VIOFO includes a 6 m (about 19.7 ft) rear cable. VANTRUE includes 20 ft and sells a 29.5 ft extended rear cable aimed at pickups, SUVs, and vans. Garmin’s 13 ft cable is the 12V power lead, not a rear-camera run. Cab rear glass sees the bed and a tailgater. It does not see the road behind a trailer. If you tow, a rear-window cam is not a trailer cam.

Match the kit to the truck, not the Amazon bestseller row.

F-150 windshield / Co-Pilot360. The factory forward camera lives in the housing behind the rearview. Mount the dash cam beside that shroud, not on it, not shading it. Garmin Mini 3 is the one that actually fits in that leftover strip of glass. VIOFO’s taller body can hide behind the mirror if you park it in the wiper sweep. VANTRUE N4 Pro is the biggest of these three — budget glass, or accept it in the view.

Polarized sunglasses. Laminated truck windshields show rainbow / dot pattern through polarized lenses. That is the glass, not a defective cam. A CPL on the camera cuts dash reflection in the footage. Garmin Mini 3 has a polarizer built in. VIOFO CPL-100 and VANTRUE CPL are optional and sold separately. The CPL does not fix what your sunglasses do to the windshield.

12V fuse tap vs OBD. Cigarette plug = no parking mode. VIOFO HK3 and VANTRUE’s hardwire kit are fuse-tap jobs: constant, ACC, and ground, with a low-voltage cutoff so you do not wake up to a dead truck. Garmin’s Constant Power Cable is the OBD-II route and can feed two cameras for a set time after you shut off. Fuse tap is cleaner if you already live in the box. OBD is faster if you do not want to pick fuses. Do not tap airbag or PCM circuits. Do not feed these cams with a PD USB-C car charger unless the maker says it is compatible — Vantrue says N4 Pro is not.

Rear window vs trailer. Stick the rear cam on the cab glass and you record the bed and whoever is on your bumper. A fifth-wheel or bumper-pull hides that view. None of these three is a trailer-tail camera. VANTRUE’s listing even notes you can aim the rear cam into a pickup bed / cargo area. That is cargo, not the road behind a trailer.

Capacitor vs battery. Truck dash in July is a heat soak. Super capacitor (all three picks) is the spec that survives it. A lithium cell in a cheap Amazon dual is the one that swells. If the listing brags about a built-in battery, keep scrolling.

Open the Amazon listing and read the box contents. If there is no rear camera in the photos, it is not a dual kit.

2021+ F-150: Co-Pilot360 camera sits in the mirror shroud. Leave it alone. Mini 3 tucks beside it. VIOFO can sit in the black-dot band at the top of the glass with the lens in the wiper path — if it is outside the wipe, rain footage is junk.

SuperCrew: VIOFO’s 6 m rear cable is in the same length class as a full-cab run (A-pillar, headliner, C-pillar, rear glass). VANTRUE’s 20 ft in-box cable is the same idea; the 29.5 ft extension is the one Vantrue names for pickups if you come up short or want slack around a sunroof. Regular Cab is easy. SuperCab rear glass is a smaller target.

Fuse box on an F-150 is a Micro2 / mini mix depending on year. Use the taps that match the slot. Garmin owners who do not want to pick fuses use the OBD Constant Power Cable under the dash.

Rear-window cam on an F-150 sees the bed. Tonneau, rack, or a loaded 8-foot bed will eat that view. A trailer hides it completely.
