Who should buy which
For you if: you want a roll-up that clears the bed toward the cab, you will match year and bed length before you click, and you know soft vinyl weather cover vs hard aluminum-slat security are different products. You haul groceries, tools, or weekend gear and want one of three jobs: soft daily, hard walk-on security, or budget soft.
Skip these if: you want panels that fold flat against the cab (hard fold), a cover that disappears into a bulkhead canister (retractable), or a soft trifold that unclamps in seconds. Also skip if you were about to order a 5.5-foot cover for a 6.5-foot bed, or a Tacoma X4s without the Toyota Deck Rail System when RealTruck says that rail is required.
The covers above are F-150 versions. All three jobs carry over to Silverado, Ram, Tacoma, Sierra, and Tundra. Check the cover maker’s fit chart for your year and bed length. Find your truck below lists the trucks we have year-specific picks for. Want a fold, a retractable, or a trifold instead? See Best tonneau covers.
The ones that matter
A roll-up is a different mechanism than a hard fold, a retractable canister, or a soft trifold. Soft roll-up and hard roll-up share the “open toward the cab” motion and almost nothing else about security or walk-on.
Soft roll-up vs hard roll-up
TruXedo TruXport and Tyger T1 are soft vinyl tarps on rails. You release the rear latch, roll toward the cab, and buckle the roll. They keep rain and dust off groceries. Neither brand publishes a walk-on rating for them. They are not Level-3 slash-resistant covers. TruXport is the walk-in RealTruck soft roll with USA assembly language and the cleaner daily Soft pick. T1 is the budget soft when you accept Tyger branding.
BAK Revolver X4s is interlocking aluminum slats under vinyl. RealTruck rates 400 lb evenly distributed. Rotational locking rails run the bed length. Slam latches. Level-3 security language vs hook-and-loop soft covers. That is why the hard roll-up wins on security and walk-on — not because soft covers are “bad,” but because they are a different product.
Do not mix siblings. BAKFlip MX4 is a hard fold, not X4s. Revolver X2 is a different BAK roll with different warranty and finish language. TruXedo Lo Pro or Sentry is not TruXport. Trifecta 2.0 is a soft trifold, not a soft roll-up.
Bed length is the model
A short bed is not a 6.5, and short beds differ from truck to truck. F-150, Silverado, Ram, Tundra, Tacoma, Sierra: the cover is cut to that bed. If Amazon does not name your year and bed length, it is the wrong cover.
The three covers shown are F-150 short-bed versions. TruXport and X4s are cut for the 5’7″ (67.1″) box, and Tyger lists the T1 as 5.5′ (67″), the same short bed. They won’t fit a 6.5-ft or 8-ft bed, so order the version for yours.
Weather is not a sealed camper
Tonneaus are weather-resistant. Amazon’s TruXport description has used “watertight,” while RealTruck talks about weather, no sag, and seals. BAK markets TriShield for seam and leak resistance, and that still isn’t a camper shell. If the load cannot get wet, put it in a box.
Tacoma X4s needs the deck rail
On a Tacoma, the BAK Revolver X4s (RealTruck BAK-80446) fits 2024–2026 Tacoma 5′ bed. RealTruck: installation requires the Toyota Deck Rail System; if the truck does not have it, buy the rail from Toyota. Without the deck rail, it is not a clamp-on install.
Spec table
Comparison. No prices. Confirm year and bed length before you buy.
Before you order
Match year, make, and bed length. Then check the fit on Amazon. If your truck is not named, it is the wrong cover.
Bed length is the model. F-150 5.5 (the 5-foot-7 box) vs 6.5 vs 8. Silverado or Sierra short vs standard. Ram 5-foot-7 vs 6-foot-4. Tundra 5.5 vs 6.5. Tacoma 5 vs 6. Gladiator is its own Jeep bed. Super Duty 6.75 vs 8 is not F-150.
Half-ton is not HD. An F-150 cover is not an F-250 or F-350 cover. Silverado 1500 is not 2500/3500. Same for Ram.
Generations. 2015–2020 F-150 is not automatically every 2021–2026 model — the TruXport shown fits 2015–2026, while the Tyger T1 and BAK-80339 shown fit 2021 and newer short-bed F-150 and Lightning. Ram 1500 Classic is not 2019+ Ram 1500. Tundra 2007–2021 is not 2022+. Tacoma 2016–2023 is not 2024+.
Rail, liner, and deck rail. Spray-in is usually fine. Thick drop-in plastic liners and over-the-rail liners can fight clamps (Tyger flags over-rail liner clearance). On a Tacoma, RealTruck says the X4s needs the Deck Rail System. RamBox beds and the MultiPro and MultiFlex tailgates get their own versions when the brand makes them.
Find your truck
We have year-specific picks for these trucks. For any other truck, check the cover maker’s fit chart for your year and bed length.
The BAK Revolver X4s link is for the 2024–2026 Tacoma 5′ bed (BAK-80446), and that cover needs the Toyota Deck Rail System.

Skip these
No-name soft rolls and cheap no-name plastic-clamp trifolds. They pond water, they rust the rails, and they leave in a parking lot.
Claiming walk-on or Level-3 on Tyger T1 or TruXport. Neither brand publishes those ratings for a soft cover. The 400 lb rating and Level-3 security belong to the BAK Revolver X4s.
A roll-up when you really want a fold, retractable, or trifold. For a hard fold (BAKFlip MX4), a retractable (RetraxPRO XR), or a soft trifold (Extang Trifecta 2.0), see Best tonneau covers.
Wrong bed length. The short-bed covers shown here won’t fit a 6.5-ft or 8-ft bed.
Tacoma X4s without Deck Rail. RealTruck requires the Toyota Deck Rail System on BAK-80446.
Expecting it to be waterproof. These covers keep weather out. They are not a sealed camper.
Other trucks
The covers shown are F-150 short-bed versions because that is the most common truck for them. The same three picks hold on Silverado, Ram, Tundra, Tacoma, and Sierra. Just match your year and bed length.
Care
Clear snow and ice before you roll a hard cover hard — aluminum slats still prefer even loads. Soft vinyl: keep tension correct (or trust Gen 2 SureTension on TruXport), wipe grit out of the Velcro hook-and-loop so the side seal still bites, and do not treat a soft tarp like a step stool. Drain tubes and rail seals (where the brand includes them) only work if they are seated.

FAQ
What is the best soft vs hard roll-up tonneau cover?
For a soft roll-up you leave on every day, buy TruXedo TruXport. For hard aluminum-slat security and a published 400 lb walk-on rating, buy BAK Revolver X4s. For budget soft roll-up without RealTruck money, buy Tyger Auto T1. Soft is not hard. Skip no-name vinyl.
Soft roll-up vs hard roll-up — which should I buy?
Buy soft (TruXport or T1) when weather and fast bed access matter more than slash resistance and walk-on. Buy hard (BAK Revolver X4s) when you want interlocking aluminum slats, rotational locking rails, Level-3 security language, and a 400 lb even load rating. Soft covers do not get a walk-on number here.
Is this the same as the best tonneau covers guide?
No. Best tonneau covers compares BAKFlip MX4 (hard fold), RetraxPRO XR (retractable), and Extang Trifecta 2.0 (soft trifold). This guide covers soft and hard roll-ups only.
Can I walk on a TruXedo TruXport or Tyger T1?
Do not. Neither brand publishes a walk-on rating for these soft roll-ups. BAK Revolver X4s is the pick here with RealTruck’s 400 lb evenly distributed rating.
Does BAK Revolver X4s fit Lightning and Raptor?
On the F-150 version, RealTruck BAK-80339: yes for 2021–2026 F-150 and Raptor and 2022–2026 Lightning 5’7″ bed. Use Amazon’s fit check too, because some Amazon year lists still run behind.
Does the Tacoma BAK X4s need extra hardware?
RealTruck BAK-80446 (2024–2026 Tacoma 5′ bed) requires the Toyota Deck Rail System. If your Tacoma does not have it, buy the rail from Toyota before you treat the cover as a clamp-only install.
Tyger T1 vs TruXedo TruXport — which soft roll-up?
TruXport is the TruckDaily soft daily: RealTruck branding, USA assembly language, cleaner daily Soft pick. T1 is the budget soft: 24 oz vinyl, Al rails, 5-year US warranty, no published walk-on or Made-in claim. Match bed length on both.
Will a soft roll-up stop theft?
No soft hook-and-loop (Velcro) cover is a lockbox. BAK Revolver X4s is the security pick here (rotational locking rails, slam latches, Level-3 language). Soft covers are weather first.
