Toyota Recalls 48,280 Tacoma TRD Off-Roads After Bilstein Shock Reservoirs Can Detach

NHTSA 26V514 / Toyota 26TB14 covers certain 2024-2025 Tacoma TRD Off-Road (and 2024 Hybrid TRD Off-Road) trucks with Bilstein external-reservoir dampers. Corrosion at an untreated welded flange can let the oil reservoir detach. The campaign covers 48,280 trucks. Dealers inspect and replace dampers free. Owner letters start September 21 (most by October 5). 2026 Tacomas are not in this campaign.

TruckDaily take

Who it's for: Anyone with a 2024 or 2025 Tacoma that wears a TRD Off-Road badge, including a 2024 Hybrid TRD Off-Road, and anyone about to buy one used or point one at a trail this month.

Who should skip: 2026 Tacoma owners looking for this campaign. 2026 trucks are not in 26V514. Other Tacoma grades that do not use these Bilstein external-reservoir dampers are not the population Toyota named.

What we'd actually do: If the badge says TRD Off-Road and the year is 2024 or 2025, run the VIN this week at nhtsa.gov/recalls or the Toyota recall lookup Toyota named in its August 6 notice. Do not wait for the October mailer. Book the free inspection if the VIN hits.

Why this is a this-week VIN check, not an October problem

Toyota's August 6 newsroom post is short. Certain 2024-2025 Tacoma TRD Off-Road vehicles. About 48,000 U.S. trucks in Toyota's wording. Car and Driver, working off the NHTSA filing, puts the count at 48,280. TruckDaily is using 48,280.

The hardware is the TRD Off-Road Bilstein damper with an external oil reservoir, the piggyback you can see from the side of the truck. Car and Driver: a welded flange holds that reservoir to the damper body. Between the reservoir, the flange, and the body there is an untreated metal area that can corrode. Corrosion can fail the weld. The reservoir can break free and fall off. Toyota: if the reservoir detaches while driving, it can create a road hazard and raise the risk of a crash or injury to another road user.

That is a thing that can leave the truck and sit in a lane. It is not a "wait for the letter, then maybe call the dealer" problem if you are about to buy a used 2024-2025 TRD Off-Road or drive one across a state this weekend.

Toyota's own notice tells owners to check involvement at Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls with a VIN or license plate. Run it. Do not assume the badge is the recall. Do not assume the badge is a free pass either. The campaign is certain trucks with those dampers, identified by VIN.

2024 Hybrid TRD Off-Road is in. 2026 Tacomas are not. If a seller says "it's a 2026, same shocks, same recall," that is not this campaign.

What Toyota will do, and when the letters actually go

Remedy is not a software flash. Toyota: for all involved vehicles, the dealer inspects the front and rear shock absorber assemblies and replaces the affected assemblies with improved ones, at no cost. Car and Driver: dealers inspect, and if needed the front and rear damper assemblies are replaced free with improved parts.

Toyota's August 6 phrasing is that it will notify customers by early October 2026. Car and Driver, August 24, says owners will be notified by mail by October 5, 2026. TruckDaily is locking letters to start September 21, with most by October 5. Toyota's "early October" line matches that October 5 date. Dealers were already in the loop by the time Car and Driver published; Toyota's filing is dated August 6.

The letter is the last step, not the first. Federal recall mail is slow on purpose. The VIN check is live now. If you are shopping a used 2024 or 2025 TRD Off-Road, the lookup is part of the test drive, same as a Carfax and a lift inspection. If you already own one, run the VIN before a trip, not after a reservoir is in the road.

What this campaign is not

It is not a 2026 Tacoma recall. Say that out loud at the parts counter if someone tries to write 26V514 on a 2026 RO.

It is not every Tacoma. Toyota named TRD Off-Road. Car and Driver ties the Bilstein external-reservoir dampers to that grade. Do not expand the population to TRD Pro, Trailhunter, or SR5 because the internet likes a bigger number.

It is not a horsepower story and it does not get a spec table. There is no tow rating to update. The question is whether this VIN has these dampers, and whether the dealer has replaced them.

TruckDaily is not adding complaint counts, warranty-claim tallies, or field-report math on top of Toyota and Car and Driver. The safety condition is the reservoir that can come off. The shopper action is the VIN.

Used-buy and trail-day checklist

  1. 1. Read the badge and the year. TRD Off-Road, 2024 or 2025 (including 2024 Hybrid TRD Off-Road): this campaign is in play. 2026: it is not.
  2. 2. Run the 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Toyota's August 6 notice also points to Toyota.com/recall.
  3. 3. If it hits, call a Toyota dealer, reference NHTSA 26V514 / Toyota 26TB14, and schedule the free inspection. Do not wait for September 21 or October 5.
  4. 4. If you are the buyer, do not take a "letter didn't come yet" as a clean truck. The letters start September 21. Most should be out by October 5. The defect does not wait on USPS.
  5. 5. After the repair, keep the work order. A detached reservoir is a road-hazard recall. Proof of the improved dampers matters on a used sale.

If you already paid a shop to replace a leaking piggyback out of pocket, Toyota's notice still sends you to a dealer for this campaign. TruckDaily is not inventing a reimbursement rule Toyota did not print on August 6. Ask the dealer, with the VIN and 26V514 / 26TB14 on the RO, what Toyota will do on a truck that already has mixed dampers. Do not assume an aftermarket set closes a safety recall.

A used-truck price that "already includes the recall" is not a repair. Either the VIN is clear on nhtsa.gov/recalls, or the improved assemblies are on the truck with a Toyota work order, or the sale waits. Letters start September 21. Most should be out by October 5. The reservoir can come off before either date.

If the VIN does not hit, you are not in 26V514. That is not a blessing on every other Tacoma campaign. It is only this one.
