Ford Makes the 7.3 Godzilla Standard on 2027 Super Duty — Then Cuts 40 lb-ft

PickupTruckTalk’s Tim Esterdahl, citing Ford on August 20, 2026, puts the 2027 Super Duty 7.3 Godzilla at 420 hp and 445 lb-ft — down from 2026’s 430 hp and 485 lb-ft — and Ford made that V-8 the only gasoline engine on F-250 and F-350.

Austin Solimine, Super Duty brand manager, told PickupTruckTalk the 2027 7.3 does not use a gasoline particulate filter. The 6.8 is gone. The cheaper standard-output 6.7 Power Stroke, 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft, is gone. The high-output 6.7 remains at 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft. Ford.com still showed last year’s 430/485 Super Duty copy as of September 2, 2026, leftover 2026 website copy rather than a 2027 sticker. Ford has not published a 2027 max-tow.

2026 comparison only, labeled 2026, not a 2027 rating: PTT’s table puts the 2026 6.8 at 405/445, the 2026 7.3 at 430/485, and the 2027 7.3 at 420/445. That is a 15 hp advantage over the deleted 6.8 and the same 445 lb-ft peak torque.

TruckDaily take

Ford made every gas Super Duty a 7.3 and then published a 7.3 that peaks at the old 6.8’s torque. Diesel shoppers who needed the cheaper 475/1,050 Power Stroke no longer have that row. Ford.com is still selling leftover 2026 copy. Shop the engines Ford confirmed to PickupTruckTalk. Ford has not published a 2027 max-tow.

Who it's for. Anyone ordering a gas 2027 F-250 or F-350 who wanted the 7.3 displacement without a second gasoline row on the sheet — XL through Platinum now starts there. Anyone who has been asking Ford for Tremor with a Crew Cab, 176-inch wheelbase, and 8-foot bed. Diesel shoppers who were going to buy the high-output 6.7 anyway; that engine is the only diesel left, still 500 hp / 1,200 lb-ft.

Who should skip. Anyone treating Ford.com’s 430 hp / 485 lb-ft Super Duty copy as a 2027 rating. Anyone who needed the cheaper standard-output 6.7 (475/1,050) to make diesel math work. Anyone who wanted a 6.8. Anyone trying to sign a 2027 on last year’s max-tow or payload. Skip waiting on a gasoline-particulate-filter explanation of the haircut — Ford told PickupTruckTalk there is no GPF on the 2027 7.3.

What we'd actually buy. A Crew Cab F-250 4x4 with the 7.3 and Tremor on the 176-inch wheelbase / 8-foot bed — the configuration Ford actually published — or the 6.7 HO if the job is diesel. We would not sign a 2027 on last year’s tow number.

Ford has not published a 2027 max-tow

Ford has not published a 2027 Super Duty conventional, fifth-wheel, or gooseneck maximum in the sources used here. PickupTruckTalk’s August 20 engine story does not print a 2027 max-tow. Ford From the Road’s Tremor piece does not print a 2027 max-tow. Ford Authority’s May engine-cut story does not print a 2027 max-tow. Solimine’s statement to PickupTruckTalk claims work capacity and “best-in-class payload” without a pound figure.

A 2026 Super Duty towing guide is a 2026 document. It is not a 2027 rating. A dealer “same as last year” line is not a published number on this page. When Ford publishes a 2027 chart, that is the number. Until then the cell is Not published.

The same gap covers payload and starting price. There is no 2027 OEM pound figure. There is no 2027 OEM MSRP. Ford From the Road told readers pricing and Build & Price would follow order banks. PickupTruckTalk says those banks are open as of August 20. Open banks are not a published stickersheet.

The 7.3 is standard. The 7.3 is also down 40 lb-ft.

PickupTruckTalk’s Tim Esterdahl published the ratings on August 20, 2026, after reader George Loridas spotted the change and PTT asked Ford. Ford confirmed. The 420 hp / 445 lb-ft figure is PickupTruckTalk citing Ford. It is not a Ford.com configurator number. As of September 2, 2026, Ford.com Super Duty pages still showed the 2026 7.3 line: 430 hp and 485 lb-ft. That website copy is leftover 2026. It is not the 2027 number Ford gave PickupTruckTalk.

The 2026 Super Duty sold two gasoline V-8s. The 6.8 was 405 hp / 445 lb-ft. The 7.3 was 430 hp / 485 lb-ft. For 2027 the 6.8 is gone. Solimine, Super Duty brand marketing manager in PickupTruckTalk’s attribution, told PTT Ford is streamlining the gas offering:

“We are streamlining our gas powertrain offering to better align with the needs of our customers. Our customers have told us they value simplicity and high-level capability. In response, we are making our most powerful and popular gas engine—the 7.3L V8—the standard gas engine across the Super Duty lineup. By moving from two gasoline engines to one, we are simplifying the ordering process for both our retail and fleet customers. This ensures that every customer, from the work-ready XL to the premium trims, starts with the heavy-duty performance and displacement of the 7.3L V8.”

That half is the win. Every gas truck is a 7.3. The other half is the haircut. Same statement, next paragraph, still Solimine via PickupTruckTalk:

“We’ve updated the 7.3L engine to ensure the Super Duty remains compliant with the latest environmental standards. While this resulted in a minor adjustment to peak output figures, the 7.3L remains a leading gasoline engine in terms of displacement and real-world work capacity. It continues to deliver the performance that Super Duty customers expect including best-in-class payload.”

Ford calls 10 hp and 40 lb-ft a minor adjustment. On paper, the 2027 7.3 now peaks at the same 445 lb-ft as the 6.8 it replaced. It keeps a 15 hp edge over that deleted engine. Displacement is still 7.3 liters. Peak torque is not still 485. “Best-in-class payload” in that statement is a Ford claim, not a published pound figure.

Ford did not tell PickupTruckTalk what changed inside the engine. Calibration, catalyst, cold-start strategy — PTT listed those as technically possible. Ford did not pick one. Ford did separately confirm what it is not: a gasoline particulate filter. PickupTruckTalk: Ford confirmed the 2027 7.3 does not use a GPF, unlike some F-150 and Maverick engines. This is not a GPF story. Ford ruled that out.

Diesel shoppers lose the cheap Power Stroke

Ford Authority’s May 2026 coverage is the first named public cut of the engine count: 6.8 gone, standard-output 6.7 Power Stroke gone, 7.3 gas and high-output 6.7 remaining. Use May for what was deleted. Use August 20 for what the 7.3 now makes. That May table of 430 hp / 485 lb-ft predates the Ford confirmation PickupTruckTalk published in August, so it is not a 2027 rating.

The deleted diesel was the 2026 standard-output 6.7: 475 hp / 1,050 lb-ft, per PickupTruckTalk’s read of Ford’s online order guide. The remaining diesel is the high-output 6.7: 500 hp / 1,200 lb-ft. PTT: HO stays optional on F-250 and F-350 pickups and is standard on F-450. Two gas engines plus two diesels became one gas engine plus one diesel.

If the job needed diesel and the budget was built on the 475/1,050 row, 2027 does not have that row. The HO is the diesel. Ford has not published a 2027 diesel-upcharge MSRP in these sources, so last year’s option price is not a 2027 sticker.

Tremor finally gets the Crew 176 / 8-foot bed

The engine story is the change with a published output. The body change with a published configuration is Tremor.

Ford From the Road, in Solimine’s byline: customers have asked for Tremor with an 8-foot bed since the package landed on Super Duty. For 2027, Tremor Off-Road Package is available on Crew Cab with the 176-inch wheelbase and 8-foot bed. PickupTruckTalk matches that and names the trims: XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum. From the Road pairs that long-box Tremor with a 48-gallon fuel tank, the largest available on Super Duty, plus the package’s 35-inch tires, factory lift, and electronic-locking rear differential. That is cab, bed, wheelbase, and tank size. It is not a tow rating, and it is not mpg.

PickupTruckTalk: Tremor also expands to XL trucks that take the STX Appearance and XL Driver Assist packages. From the Road: that XL/STX path is meant to lower the barrier to the same Tremor hardware. A separate XL Off-Road 35-Inch Tire Package puts 35-inch tires, more ride height, an e-locker, a limited-slip front differential, performance shocks, trail modes, and skid plates on an XL Crew Cab 4×4 single-rear-wheel short-box without Tremor graphics (PTT). That is a work-truck 4x4 package, not a second Godzilla rating.

Other 2027 order-guide items PickupTruckTalk listed, separate from the engine news: Carhartt on qualifying XLT Crew Cabs; a Proud to Honor appearance package; Platinum on F-350 / F-450 / F-550 Chassis Cab; an available digital rearview mirror; Neptune Blue and Iconic Silver Metallic; SuperCab rear-seat delete; fleet 65- and 75-mph speed limiters; standard CNG/propane gaseous-engine prep with the 7.3. Those are real order-guide lines. They do not restore 40 lb-ft, and they do not create a 2027 max-tow.

Ford.com’s leftover 430/485 is still 2026 copy. The 6.8 is not still for sale. The standard-output 6.7 is not still for sale. This is a Super Duty engine and Tremor-config story, not a Ram comparison.

FAQ

Is the 7.3 Godzilla now the only gas engine on the 2027 Super Duty?

Yes. Austin Solimine told PickupTruckTalk Ford is making the 7.3 the standard gas engine across the Super Duty lineup and moving from two gasoline engines to one. The 6.8 is gone. Ford Authority reported that deletion in May 2026.

What does the 2027 7.3 actually make?

420 hp / 445 lb-ft, per PickupTruckTalk citing Ford on August 20, 2026. That is down from 2026’s 430 hp / 485 lb-ft — 10 hp and 40 lb-ft. Peak torque now matches the deleted 6.8’s 445 lb-ft. Ford.com’s still-posted 430/485 is leftover 2026 copy, not a 2027 figure.

Why did Ford cut 40 lb-ft?

Solimine, via PTT: Ford updated the 7.3 “to ensure the Super Duty remains compliant with the latest environmental standards,” which “resulted in a minor adjustment to peak output figures.” Ford did not name the specific change. Ford did confirm it is not a gasoline particulate filter.

Did Ford add a GPF to the 2027 7.3?

No. PickupTruckTalk: Ford separately confirmed the 2027 7.3 does not use a gasoline particulate filter.

Is the standard-output 6.7 Power Stroke gone? What diesel is left?

Gone. The 2026 SO 6.7 was 475 hp / 1,050 lb-ft. The remaining diesel is the high-output 6.7 at 500 hp / 1,200 lb-ft, optional on F-250 / F-350 and standard on F-450 (PTT). Ford Authority reported the SO deletion in May 2026.

What is 2027 Super Duty max tow?

Not published. Ford has not published a 2027 conventional, fifth-wheel, or gooseneck maximum. None of the PickupTruckTalk, Ford From the Road, or Ford Authority coverage used here prints a 2027 max-tow.

Why does Ford.com still say 430 hp and 485 lb-ft?

Because Ford.com was still showing 2026 Super Duty copy as of September 2, 2026. The 2027 ratings Ford confirmed to PickupTruckTalk on August 20 are 420/445. Shop the dated Ford confirmation, not the leftover product page.

Can I get Tremor with an 8-foot bed on a 2027 Super Duty?

Yes. Ford From the Road and PickupTruckTalk: Tremor is now available on Crew Cab with the 176-inch wheelbase and 8-foot bed (XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum per PTT). That is a published cab and bed. It is not a published 2027 tow number.
