Tundra Engine Recall: Phases 3 and 4 Open, Rest Slated for 2027
Toyota opened phases 3 and 4 of its 2022-2024 Tundra engine recall on Oct. 22. Here's who can get the fix now and the estimated 2027 dates for the rest.
Toyota has opened phases 3 and 4 of its Tundra engine recall, so more 2022-2024 Tundra owners can now get the free main bearing inspection and, if the truck fails it, a new engine. Toyota’s updated dealer letter, posted by NHTSA on October 31, 2026, shows phases 3 and 4 launched October 22 and puts estimated dates on the last five phases, running from March to September 2027.
We could not find a Toyota press release on this update. Everything below comes from the dealer letter, the NHTSA recall records and Toyota’s first quarterly completion report, all filed with NHTSA.

TruckDaily take
Who this is for. Anyone who owns, or is shopping a used, 2022-2024 Toyota Tundra.
Who should skip. 2025 and newer Tundra owners. Toyota’s recall covers trucks built through early August 2024.
What we’d do. Run your VIN at NHTSA or in the Toyota app today. If your truck shows the remedy as available, book the inspection now, because there are a lot of trucks in line. If your truck is still in a later phase and it knocks, runs rough or won’t start, call your Toyota dealer right away instead of waiting for the letter. Shopping used? Ask the current owner for proof the 25TA14 inspection or engine swap was done, and run the VIN yourself.
Tundra engine recall phases, at a glance
| Phase | Model years | Approx. trucks | Remedy timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2022-2023 Tundra | 10,000 | Available now |
| 2 | 2023-2024 Tundra | 13,000 | Available now |
| 3 | 2023-2024 Tundra | 13,000 | Available now (launched Oct. 22, 2026) |
| 4 | 2023-2024 Tundra | 13,000 | Available now (launched Oct. 22, 2026) |
| 5 | 2023-2024 Tundra | 15,000 | March 2027 (estimated) |
| 6 | 2023-2024 Tundra | 14,000 | April 2027 (estimated) |
| 7 | 2024 Tundra | 14,000 | June 2027 (estimated) |
| 8 | 2024 Tundra | 14,000 | August 2027 (estimated) |
| 9 | 2024 Tundra | 18,000 | September 2027 (estimated) |
Toyota says the 2027 dates are estimates and subject to change. Phases 1 through 6 cover trucks built from late November 2021 to mid-February 2024, and phases 7 through 9 cover trucks built from early February 2024 to early August 2024. Toyota says phases are generally based on vehicle age, but your VIN decides your phase, not your model year. The phase counts are rounded and do not add up to the roughly 157,000 trucks Toyota lists as covered in the same letter, and Toyota does not explain the gap.
What the problem is
Toyota says machining debris may not have been cleared from some engines when they were built. That debris can damage the #1 main bearing, which can lead to engine knocking, rough running, a no-start or a loss of motive power. Losing power at higher speeds raises the risk of a crash. The recall started as NHTSA 25V767, filed November 6, 2025, and Toyota expanded it on May 20, 2026 to cover more 2024 Tundras under NHTSA 26V320, which lists 43,566 trucks. Toyota’s own recall number for both is 25TA14, and 25V767 itself expanded an earlier Toyota recall, 24V381.
What the dealer does
The dealer runs inspection software on the #1 main bearing and pulls the truck’s stored drive data. The engine does not come apart for this. If the software cannot confirm the bearing is free of abnormal wear, the dealer replaces the engine. It is free either way. Toyota’s dealer letter allows 1.5 hours of labor for the inspection and 14.5 hours for inspection plus a new engine, so a failed inspection is not a same-day fix.
If your truck needs an engine, Toyota’s owner FAQ says you will be offered a rental at no charge until the engine is replaced. Engines are not stocked at local parts centers. They ship from a single third-party warehouse once the dealer uploads a failed inspection, and Toyota’s letter estimates 9 to 13 days to Alaska and 10 to 14 days to Hawaii, with shorter windows on its map for the lower 48. The October 29 update added an option for dealers to use an engine already on hand at the store instead of ordering a new one.
Two more points from Toyota’s FAQ. A private oil analysis does not replace the inspection, and thicker oil does not fix the issue, since Toyota specifies 0W-20 for these engines. If you already paid for a related repair, Toyota says reimbursement instructions come in the owner letter.
How many trucks have been fixed so far
Toyota’s first quarterly report on 25V767, submitted October 21, 2026, counts 126,691 vehicles in that recall and 5,993 remedied. That NHTSA total also counts vehicles that were inspected and did not need a new engine. The 25V767 population includes some Lexus LX 600 and GX 550 models, and the 2024 Tundras added under 26V320 are counted separately. NHTSA says 25V767 owner letters went out August 28, 2026. For 26V320, interim letters went out July 23, 2026, and Toyota will send more letters once the remedy is available for those trucks.

FAQ
Which Toyota Tundras are in the engine recall?
Certain 2022-2024 Tundras built from late November 2021 to early August 2024, about 157,000 trucks in Toyota’s count. Run your VIN at NHTSA or in the Toyota app to be sure.
Is the Tundra engine recall fix available for my truck?
Only if your truck is in phases 1 through 4. Phases 3 and 4 opened October 22, 2026. Phases 5 through 9 are estimated for March through September 2027, and Toyota says those dates can change.
Will Toyota replace my Tundra engine?
Only if the inspection cannot confirm the #1 main bearing is free of abnormal wear. If it fails, Toyota replaces the engine for free and offers a rental at no charge until the job is done.
Is it safe to drive my Tundra before the fix?
Toyota says to get the free inspection as soon as your phase opens. Until then, if the engine knocks, runs rough or won’t start, contact your Toyota dealer right away.
Does an oil analysis show if my Tundra engine is OK?
No. Toyota says an oil analysis cannot assess the #1 main bearing for this problem, and only the dealer inspection counts.
