Next-Gen Ford F-150 Prototype Builds Start Early 2027, Ford Says

Ford says next-gen F-150 prototype builds start in early 2027, with five times the powertrain durability testing and almost 4 million test miles. What we know.

Ford says prototype builds of the next-generation F-150 begin in the first quarter of 2027, and the truck will be “the most extensively tested truck ever at Ford.” CEO Jim Farley laid out the plan on Ford’s third-quarter earnings call October 28, 2026: five times the powertrain durability testing, double the endurance and strength testing, and almost 4 million miles of full-vehicle testing.

Ford also said the plants that build the new F-150 will need planned production downtime next year, and that the new Super Duty line at Oakville, Ontario should largely cover the lost output. What Ford did not give: a model year, a reveal date, engines, specs or a price. Everything below comes from Ford’s release and the call.

TruckDaily take

Who this is for. Anyone shopping a half-ton in the next year or two who is wondering whether to buy the current F-150 or wait for the new one.

Who should skip. Super Duty owners looking for news on their truck. The only Super Duty item here is the new Oakville plant, which adds output, not a new model.

What we’d do. If you need a truck now, the current F-150 is a known quantity, and prototype builds in early 2027 mean the new one is not close to a dealer lot. Ford has not said when it goes on sale. The bigger testing push reads like Ford answering for its recall history, and that is a good sign for the new truck, but a first model year is still a first model year. If you can wait, wait for real specs and a few months of owner reports before you sign.

Why the testing numbers matter

The current F-150 has had its share of recalls, from instrument clusters to tailgate cables. Farley tied the new testing targets straight to quality, and said Ford will apply the same approach across the company. Five times the powertrain durability work is a big jump on paper. Ford did not share what the testing covers or how the old baseline was measured, so we cannot tell you what it means for any one engine or transmission yet.

The timeline is worth reading carefully. Prototype builds are the hand-built test trucks that go into durability and validation work, not saleable trucks. Ford did not tie the new F-150 to a model year on the call, and anything you read putting a firm year, engine list or price on it is not coming from Ford.

Oakville Super Duty and the 2027 downtime

Ford’s second Super Duty plant in Oakville, Ontario reached what Ford calls OK-to-Buy last week and started shipping trucks to dealers. Farley said the ramp is running ahead of planned daily volume and that early quality is fully competitive with Ford’s existing Super Duty plant. In the release, Ford said Ford Pro earnings fell 16% to $1.7 billion in the quarter, partly because of temporary launch costs at Oakville.

That extra Super Duty output is Ford’s plan for next year, when it takes F-150 plants down to retool. Ford did not say which plants, when, or for how long. F-150 stock was already lean at 49 days of retail supply coming out of September. Ford Pro president Andrew Frick said the company expects to run at the low end of its 55 to 65 day range by year end. Tight stock usually means less room to deal, so do not expect big discounts on the current truck.

Other truck notes from the call

Farley said F-Series is on pace for its 50th straight year as America’s best-selling truck and that Maverick is the best-selling hybrid pickup. Ford will launch an affordable midsize pickup for international markets next year, with base material costs Ford expects to be 20% lower than today’s Ranger. Ford did not say it is coming to the U.S. On the electric side, Frick repeated the Fathom’s $28,350 starting MSRP and said the lineup will run into the high $30,000s, with launch on track for the fourth quarter of 2027.

FAQ

When is the next-generation Ford F-150 coming out?

Ford has not said. On its October 28, 2026 earnings call, Ford said prototype builds begin in the first quarter of 2027. Ford gave no model year, reveal date or on-sale date.

What engines will the new F-150 have?

Ford has not announced engines, specs or pricing. It only said powertrain durability testing is five times what it was, aimed at what Farley called a “bulletproof powertrain” target.

How much testing is Ford doing on the new F-150?

Ford says five times the powertrain durability testing, double the endurance and strength testing, and full-vehicle test miles up nearly 60% to almost 4 million miles. Farley called it the most extensively tested truck ever at Ford.

Will F-150 production stop in 2027?

Ford said the plants getting investment for the new F-150 will need planned downtime next year. It did not say which plants or for how long, and it expects added Super Duty output from Oakville to largely offset it.

Should I wait for the new F-150 or buy a current one?

If you need a truck soon, buy the current one, since the new truck is only reaching prototype builds in early 2027. If you can wait, hold off until Ford publishes specs and prices and early owners have put some miles on it.
